Over the past six months I have been making some firm decisions about which direction I would like my business to go, in order to really, fully enjoy what I am doing. That's why we creatives choose to work for ourselves, right?
You may have noticed from my more recent product releases and various 'work in progress' shots on facebook and twitter, that I've been concentrating more on greetings cards and prints rather than the wooden keepsakes.
As much as I initially enjoyed designing the wooden keepsakes, which have been the core product line of my business, it is actually the initial design process that I enjoy most, not so much the monotony of painting hundreds of wooden shapes in exactly the same way, over and over again. It has become rather repetitive, so I can't help but feel that my design juices don't get to flow as much as I would like.
I have always said that my products are each made with love and I want to keep it that way. I don't want it to become a tedious process, afterall, my energy goes into the product which then has a place in your home, so it is important to me that it be a positive energy that I am emitting.
So I set myself some fresh challenges to kick start my brain and design skills - and I'm loving it!! My main focus is greetings cards and prints and I have a heap of new designs waiting to be released and I have some other product ideas which I'd like to explore in the future.
So at this point, it is unlikely I will release any new wooden items. This change in direction means I can focus on fresh design and illustration and spend more time doing the creative part - the part that I enjoy - working with different media, fonts, creating colour schemes, turning doodles into art, and generally pushing my creative and design skills.
I will be phasing out the wooden keepsakes from my offering. I aim to do this gradually as I use up remaining stock of wood (I hate waste!). I may actually decide to keep a limited amount of products, but that really remains to be seen, depending on whether I find it an effective use of my time to make them.
The first batch of products I am discontinuing are shown below and will be removed from my shop at the end of May. In the meantime, I have marked them down by 10% :)
I am very excited about my 'design future' and to coincide with the changes of my product line, I also have some re-branding in the pipeline, including a possible name change. I'm really looking forward to implementing all these changes within the website and blog over the summer.
